Cursed Square Twist

The Cursed (Intermediating) Square Twist is an advanced-level twist in origami tessellations and is the flat-foldable solution to the arrangements of pleats halfway between a closed square twist on one side of the paper and the same twist on the opposite side of the paper.

It’s called cursed due to the need to precrease many of the off-grid folds instead of folding the twist directly on the grid.

Uses in Tessellations

The cursed square twist is folded on a square grid and must be at least partially precreased before collapsing. It was first folded by Madonna Yoder.

This twist is used to solve symmetry constraints in tessellations involving square twists.

Here’s some examples of tessellations that use this twist:

  1. Buenas tardes Madonna Yoder.
